The Swedish aviation research tree was released not long ago, and alongside it came two interesting new Swedish ground vehicles. This new research tree is to be released in the near future, either in the very next update or at least in the near future according to a recent official War Thunder live stream. As such, today we’re taking a look at some Swedish ground vehicles that are likely to be added to War Thunder in the near future and what role they will play in the game.
So far, four vehicles have been shown which could be part of the Swedish ground tree. Two of these are already implemented as premiums in War Thunder, namely the Strv 103-0 and SAV 20.12.48. The Strv 81 (Rb 52) will most likely make a reappearance as a rank IV premium. A fourth vehicle, the ikv 72 has also been shown as part of an interview with War Thunder’s Creative Director Kirill Yudintsev on MMORPG (https://www.mmorpg.com/war-thunder/interviews/war-thunder-7th-anniversary-exclusive-interview-with-creative-director-kirill-yudintsev-1000014112). This is a light assault gun with a 75 mm tank gun with incredible depression at up to -20 degrees, good mobility, and a low profile but poor protection. In real life, it was designed and entered service during the second half of the 40s. Despite this, it will most likely have a relatively low battle rating as a researchable vehicle.
So, what will the upcoming research tree look like besides these three vehicles? Luckily, this is the area where there is the most potential for Swedish vehicles to shine in War Thunder due to the variety and rich history of Swedish ground vehicles. Common themes amongst Swedish vehicles will generally be either excellent depression with -15 or even -20 degrees of depression being common, particularly at lower tiers. For SPGs, HEAT shells should also feature excellent performance allowing for many vehicles in the Swedish tree to fit the “glass cannon” niche. There are various proposals made by fans as to how the Swedish ground forces research tree would look, but below a selection of the most likely and interesting vehicles will be listed.
At lower battle ratings, we’ll most likely see some classic vehicles used before and during the Second World War. These vehicles include variants of the famous L-60 such as the strv m/38, strv m/39 and strv m/40 which will be some of the first vehicles encountered, light tanks with three man crews, between 15 and 50 mm of frontal armour depending on variant and a good 37 mm gun capable of being depressed by 14 degrees. Historically, this vehicle also saw export success with sales going to Ireland, the Dominican Republic and Hungary where it was also produced under license.
Perhaps the most iconic Swedish tank from the war and the closest to a Swedish answer to the classical M4 Sherman, T-34 and Panzer IV available during the war was the strv m/42. A medium tank with a 75 mm gun with excellent depression of as much as 15 degrees, the same one as on the previously mentioned ikv 72, and decent frontal armour. Its performance is however closer to that of the M3 Lee than that of the classical medium tanks of the war, with a both vehicles sharing similar mobility, frontal armour and primary armament.
While foreign vehicles are likely to have a limited role in the Swedish ground forces research tree, there will be some with influence over certain parts of the tree. One of these is the strv m/41, a Swedish variant of the ever so famous Czechoslovak LT vz. 38, also known as Pz.kpfw. 38(t) in German service. This vehicle was produced under license in Sweden during the war with unique modifications and also served as a basis for a number of other vehicles, including the sav m/43. This is an assault gun comparable to the StuG III with 50 mm of frontal armour, decent mobility and an armament consisting either of a short 75 or a 105 mm gun. With the latter, it should be able to hold its own well in War Thunder thanks to HEAT rounds with high penetration developed after the war in addition of 15 degrees of depression.
Around mid-tiers, we’ll start to see vehicles developed and put in service during the latter stages of the war or early on post-war. Another casemate equipped vehicle will likely feature in multiple variants here, namely the pvkv m/43. This is a tank destroyer based on the chassis of the strv m/42 but which was equipped with increased frontal armour and a modified 75 mm anti-aircraft gun related in development to the legendary German 88. Despite being mounted in a casemate, it retains excellent depression at as much as 15 degrees. This vehicle saw development over time, with the addition of an armoured roof, engine change and most notably for War Thunder, the addition of an APDS shell. This will make this vehicle relevant at quite different BRs depending on variant.
In a similar vein, the strv 74 was also based on the strv m/42 and equipped with a modified 75 mm anti-aircraft gun. However, instead of being placed in a casemate, it was mounted in a distinctive elongated turret. This vehicle from the late 50s served to complement Swedish Centurions and shared ammunition options with the pvkv m/43 but used a somewhat longer gun, still capable of being depressed by 15 degrees.
To give both anti-aircraft vehicles and Finland some room in the article, the L-62 ANTI II should be mentioned. This was an SPAAG based on the previously mentioned L-60 chassis and equipped with a single 40 mm Bofors L/60 autocannon. It was developed in two variants, exported to Hungary and Finland respectively but never operated by the Swedish Army. As such, its inclusion could be a good way of bridging the gap between the two nations which are both currently included in the Swedish tree with two Finnish aircraft confirmed so far.
Returning to the start of the article, the ikv 72 makes a reappearance in the form of the ikv 102 and ikv 103. These two vehicles were both based on the ikv 72, but equipped with an armoured roof and a powerful 105 mm gun capable of firing HEAT shells with a penetration of over 350 mm.
At higher tiers, we’ll see vehicles spanning from the 1950s to modern day. The Centurion will most likely have a presence in the tree from tier IV to VI. This would range from the strv 81 as a Swedish Centurion Mk. 3, not confused with the Strv 81 (Rb 52) already in-game, to the 105 mm L7 equipped strv 101 and strv 102, to the strv 104 or even strv 105 with ERA and improved drivetrain.
The ikv 91 should be able to serve as a direct competitor to the Object 906, with both vehicles sharing high mobility, amphibious capability, light protection and similar gun calibres. The ikv 91’s 90 mm gun comes out on top however as it uses a 90 mm gun firing HEAT-FS with penetration, depending on variant, twice that of the Object 906’s 300 mm or even more. It was also further developed with a stabilized 105 mm gun for export purposes in the 1980s. This variant was known as the ikv 105 and was intended to be sold to India with a single prototype built.
Perhaps the most anticipated Swedish ground vehicle is however of course the S-tank. This vehicle has already been shown in War Thunder in the form of the Strv 103-0, the pre-production variant of the tank. However, there are at least five other variants of the tank that could be added to the tree, namely the S2 prototype, the three production variants of the tank known as A, B, and C respectively and finally the prototype strv 103D. The S2 would be quite similar to the Strv 103-0 already in-game, but the production variants would differ more. They would be equipped with 40 x 30 mm thick “ribs” as well as spaced armour across the frontal armour which improves protection significantly thanks to the angle of the frontal armour. Incremental automotive improvements, the addition of APFSDS, and thermal optics would also be upgrades that could come with the production variants. Finally, the strv 103D would be the ultimate variant of the S-tank in War Thunder and would be equipped with composite armour increasing effective armour vs HEAT to 960 mm as well as passive IR.
Top tier is somewhat more difficult for Sweden however in regard to featuring a suitable MBT. The Strv 121 is a logical choice, essentially a Leopard 2A4, but this is not comparable to the top tier of War Thunder. The next step in the evolution of Swedish tanks is the Strv 122 from the mid-1990s but this vehicle, while essentially being based on the Leopard 2A5 already in-game, has significantly improved protection and may well be too much for the current top tier tanks of War Thunder to handle. However, this does at least mean that there is potential for the Swedish tree if more powerful vehicles were to be introduced. But only time will tell.
The Swedish tree will feature many unique and interesting vehicles with unique qualities and features. With only a limited dependency on foreign vehicles, it will likely be a very interesting tree to play, particularly for players who enjoy playing casemate vehicles in War Thunder.
